The end of the year means warm days, long boozy lunches, Christmas parties, catching up with friends, and a bit of R&R. Then someone mentions Secret Santa, and it’s all over – your stress levels go into overdrive trying to find that perfect $20 gift for Tim in Finance.

Well, maybe it’s not that bad. But Secret Santa gifts are infamous for being awkward or gross, and buying the wrong thing can come with consequences.

Follow these five quick tips to ensure you do your office Secret Santa right this silly season.

1. Get involved

Don’t be the office Grinch.

Get into the festive spirit, draw a name out of that pointy red hat and use the opportunity as a way to get to know your co-workers a little better.

2. Set a price limit and stick to it

Secret Santa price limits level the playing field and keep things fair, ensuring that everyone receives a gift of a similar calibre. So, keep this in mind when purchasing.

3. Stay safe

Keep lewd or politically incorrect presents away from the office (even if you think your recipient will have a chuckle). You don’t want your co-workers, or worse, your boss, to misinterpret your intentions. And, unless you know the person well, stay wary of things like alcohol and clothing.

4. Don’t go overboard

No one likes a show-off.

Keep your gift simple, but thoughtful. Perhaps a novelty mug for the coffee lover, a cat-clad pair of socks for the cat lover or a gourmet gift for the chocolate lover. After all, it’s the thought that counts.

4. Do your research

Believe it or not, it is possible to buy a suitable gift for someone you don’t know well. But don’t leave it until the last minute. Give yourself enough breathing space to strike up a conversation with your office Secret Santa by the water cooler or speak to their team members.

Ask the right questions, and you’ll be surprised how easy it is to find out what they like.

5) Remember, it could always be worse

No matter what you decide to buy this year, remember that it probably won’t be as bad as some of the doozies received by these disgruntled office workers. Some of our top picks from the list include:

  • One used sock
  • A stapler
  • A book on how to be interesting
  • A single piece of fruit

We get results

Be it commercial strata or freehold properties for sale or lease in the Sydney CBD, Fringe or Metropolitan areas, we have the experience and determination to get you the best results. Our agents will guide you through all phases of the real estate process, striving to get the best possible sale or rental price, in the shortest possible time.
