9 OF THE BEST FREE WORKOUT SPOTS IN SYDNEY
If you’re looking to squeeze some exercise into your busy schedule, why not sneak in a workout during your lunch break? It’ll free up your mornings/evenings and give you a break from sitting at your desk.
The even better news? It doesn’t need to cost you an arm and a leg. Check out these 9 free workout spots in and around Sydney CBD:
1) Prince Alfred Park, Surry Hills – only minutes from Central Station, this lively park is a great place to work out. Take advantage of the one km running/walking path, sink some hoops on the basketball court, sweat it out at the free outdoor fitness stations, or kick a ball around with mates on the expansive grassy area. The park is also home to an outdoor heated swimming pool, which can be accessed by the public for a small entrance fee.
2) Beach workout – if you’re lucky enough to work close to one of Sydney’s stunning sandy beaches, turn up your workout routine with a lunchtime swim, sand (or stair) sprints, and/or bodyweight exercises.
3) Hit up Centennial Park – soak up the lush greenery of Centennial Park by walking, jogging or cycling around its 3.8km, ‘car-free’ Grand Drive. You can even ramp up your training by taking advantage of the park’s outdoor fitness stations – built for chin-ups, sit-ups, step-ups and the like.
4) Wentworth Park, Ultimo – if you’re working on the city fringe, pop down to Wentworth Park in Ultimo – just a hop, skip and a jump away from Central Station. Kick a ball around with workmates on the large grassy field or hit up one of the four exercise stations scattered around the perimeter of the park.
5) Observatory Hill Park, Millers Point – set in a picturesque location, overlooking Sydney Harbour, Observatory Hill Park is one of Sydney’s favourite exercise spots. Train with a view at one of the park’s free fitness stations, or hit a ball around with colleagues on the tennis court.
6) Barangaroo Reserve – Barangaroo Reserve is a car-free zone that features panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. Soak up the view and go for a jog (or cycle) around the reserve’s waterfront trail, or take advantage of its mix of steep stairs – perfect for a free but fierce workout!
7) The Bay Run – if you’re working close to Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock, Rodd Point or Russell Lea, test your endurance on the Iron Cove Bay Run – a 7km harbourside loop showcasing the Parramatta River and Iron Cove Bridge. Or, break a sweat at one of the free fitness stations sprinkled around the route.
8) Harbour Bridge run – soak up stunning views of the harbour with Sydney’s beloved Harbour Bridge run. Beginning in North Sydney, this 10km track takes you along the McMahon’s Point and Lavender Bay waterfront, over the Sydney Harbour Bridge, around the Sydney Opera House and back again.
9) Circular Quay circuit – take advantage of the 12km loop, which takes you around Circular Quay, past the iconic Sydney Opera House, through the beautiful Botanic Gardens, around to Lady Macquarie’s Chair, down to the Darling Harbour Circuit and back to Circular Quay via the Pyrmont Bridge.
